Introduction

At Four Seasons Vilamoura Resort, we believe that exceptional hospitality encompasses more than creating unforgettable guest experiences. It is also a responsibility to the environment, the community, and future generations. Our commitment to Sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles guides every aspect of our operations, from minimising environmental impact to fostering social equity and good governance.

This policy outlines the sustainable practices we have implemented and those we plan to adopt by early 2025, demonstrating our dedication to leading positive change. Together, we aspire to create a more sustainable, equitable, and responsible future.

Recognition

2024 has been a milestone year for Four Seasons Vilamoura Resort, with recognition for our sustainability efforts from leading organisations:

  • Turismo de Portugal: Sustainability Engaged 2023 Seal
  • Hospes by AHP: Social Responsibility Seal 2023
  • CITE: Equal Pay Seal 2024, recognising our commitment to pay equity between women and men.

Environmental Commitment

Water Efficiency

We recognise water as a precious resource and have implemented innovative measures to conserve it:

  • Flow Reducers: Installed on taps and showers to maintain pressure while reducing water usage.
  • Efficient Flushing: Toilets with reduced water flush volumes, with dual flush valves to be installed by January 2025.
  • Leak Detection and Repair: Leaks are swiftly repaired, with underground leak detectors planned for 2025.
  • Smart Monitoring: Smart meters will optimise water resource management in 2025.
  • Irrigation Practices: Drip irrigation systems and rainwater reservoirs minimise waste; watering schedules are adjusted based on weather forecasts and soil moisture levels.
  • Efficient Equipment: Timed taps in public areas, eco-friendly laundry and dishwashing machines, and salt electrolysis systems for pool maintenance (coming in 2025).
  • Awareness Campaigns: Signage encourages guests and employees to adopt water-saving behaviours.

Energy Efficiency

Reducing energy consumption and harnessing renewable energy are central to our sustainability strategy:

  • Solar Power: 96 solar panels generate energy for apartments, and solar-powered water heating systems supply The Club.
  • Energy-Saving Measures: Motion-activated lighting, energy-efficient appliances, and automatic water heater controls reduce consumption.
  • LED Lighting: Long-lasting, efficient LED lamps illuminate the resort.
  • Guest Engagement: Apartments feature thermostat guidance to encourage energy-conscious behaviours.

Recycling and Waste Reduction

Minimising waste is integral to our commitment to sustainability:

  • Comprehensive Recycling: Sorting and recycling paper, glass, plastic, and biodegradable garden waste.
  • Cooking Oil Recycling: Partnering with Ecox to transform used oils into eco-friendly detergents.
  • Composting: Food scraps are composted to enrich our gardens.
  • Plastic Reduction: Single-use plastics replaced with reusable alternatives, such as paper straws and reusable cups.
  • Fuel Reduction: Gas usage reduced by 95%; all vehicles and gardening equipment (except infrequently used tractors) are electric.

Social Responsibility / Community Support

Through the Hospes Programme by AHP, we actively support local communities:

  • Furniture Donations: Renovation projects resulted in donations of furniture, textiles, and lamps to Social Solidarity Institutions, earning the Social Responsibility Seal 2023.
  • Collaboration with Local Suppliers: Wherever possible, we work with local producers and certified suppliers to support the regional economy.

Equality and Inclusion

Our commitment to fairness and inclusivity earned us the Equal Pay Seal 2024, highlighting our dedication to equity in the workplace.
