Celebrating the Carnation Revolution

The Carnation Revolution

Celebrating our day of freedom

As April 25th approaches, Portugal gears up to commemorate a significant milestone - the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution. This historic event marked the end of a dark chapter in Portuguese history, the overthrow of the authoritarian Estado Novo regime, and the birth of a new era of democracy and freedom.

At Four Seasons Vilamoura Resort, we are honoured to pay tribute to this momentous occasion. In recognition of the courage and resilience displayed by the Portuguese people, we are working on a special video for social media (head over to our instagram and facebook channels on the 25th) to honour the spirit of the revolution. Throughout the day, our staff members will proudly wear red carnations, a symbol of remembrance and solidarity with those who fought for peaceful change.

A peaceful military coup

The Carnation Revolution, on the 25th of April, holds a special place in the hearts of every Portuguese citizen. It was a peaceful military coup orchestrated by left-leaning military officers, coupled with an unexpected surge of popular civil resistance. The iconic image of soldiers with carnations in their gun barrels became a symbol of hope and peace, contrasting sharply with the violence and oppression of the regime they sought to overthrow.

But the significance of the Carnation Revolution extends far beyond its peaceful nature. It sparked major social, economic, and political transformations in Portugal and its overseas colonies. Negotiations with African independence movements began, leading to the independence of Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Angola, and East Timor. This period also saw the mass exodus of Portuguese citizens from the former colonies, creating a diaspora known as the retornados.

The Carnation represents freedom and democracy

As we reflect on the legacy of the Carnation Revolution, we are reminded of the power of peaceful protest and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of oppression. The carnation, once a simple flower offered in a moment of celebration, has become a powerful symbol of Portugal's journey towards democracy and freedom.

Join us as we commemorate this historic milestone, celebrating not only the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution but also the promise of a brighter future for Portugal and its people. Together, let us honour the memory of those who paved the way for our freedom and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the values of democracy, equality, and justice. Viva Portugal! Viva a Liberdade!
